Que : 232. Write any four elements that hinder the success of democracy.
Answer:
Hurdles in the Success of Democracy. Indian democracy is facing various
challenges, chief among them, are as follows:
(1) Increasing Poverty and Unemployed People : About
26% people of the total population of the country are living below the poverty
line. Crores of educated and uneducated youth of the country have no perennial
source of employment. Due to this large category of citizens, the operation of
democracy becomes difficult. Poverty and unemployed citizens are more
conservative and have no inclination to adopt modern ideology and methods. Poor
and unemployed people, instead of contribution to the progress of the nation,
are only worried about their belly filling and looking after their families.
(2) Casteism, Regional Feelings and Linguistic Problems : All
the citizens in our country have been given the rights of freedom and equality
of opportunities, but the contemporary feelings of casteism and regionalism in
the country are hindering these rights of freedom and realistic equalities. The
people who believe in the democratic system in India feel that casteism will
gradually disappear from India by itself. But when people fix their political
work and behaviour giving priority to caste, the functioning of democracy is
hampered.
(3) Illiteracy : Democracy
in a country can be successful if its citizens are literate. Uneducated people
are neither aware of their rights and duties nor can they cast their vote
properly. That's why, illiteracy is a curse to democracy.
(4) Social Evils : Indian
society is a traditional society. People do not freely express here, while free
expression is a prerequisite in. democracy. Even today, social evils like
untouchability, discrimination against women, feeling of caste supremacy,
feudalistic mentality, social evils and superstition etc. are prevalent in the
society. These type of feelings are hurdles in the way of democracy.
(5) Role of Media : Media
plays an important role in democracy. Media acts as a link between the
government and the people. Government implements many welfare schemes and plans
for the people. Their propaganda and publicity is done by the media only on
professional basis whereas the media can play a positive role in formulating
public opinion and giving it proper direction.
